I am half white/ half Mexican and as a child I was virtually banned from learning Spanish. My mother was traumatized. She grew up in the 70’s and spoke only Spanish. At school she was teased and forced to wash her mouth out with soap in front of her classmates when she spoke Spanish. I regret that she never taught us it. I can understand it, but when I speak it I sound like an idiot. When people ask her why she didn’t teach it to us she claims we "never wanted to learn it" which is a lie, because I grew up in apredominatelyy latin community and was teased for only speaking English. Even now when I try to practice with her she refuses. I think that is a shame because the USA will become a bilingual country. It is already getting there fast.
i do speak spanish, but not very well
yes i do wish i would know more, the only people i speak spanish to are relatives and its really frustrating when i cant get a point across, its embarrassing…… a mexican struggling to speak spanish.
Not me
That would suck though.
I know alot of kids who are half Hispanic who don’t know the language.
One of the boys in my class, his family is from Mexico, but he was born in the US. He isn’t fluent in Spanish, and the other kids make fun of him .
That’s how I grew up, not knowing Spanish. So many people either teased (kids), or said "shame on you" (adults) because I didn’t know it. Now I say BALONEY!!! Hispanic kids in the States don’t need to know it, they’re in an ENGLISH speaking country. "Shame on you" is baloney. I say shame on anyone who comes here and doesn’t bother learning English, that’s who I say shame on.
Your cousins are fine, they don’t need Spanish. They need English. If they learn Spanish, great! If not, no big deal. Now, if they live south of the border, they’re screwed, lololol! If they live in the States, then English is fine. No one expects Black people to speak Zulu or Swahili, no one expects White people to speak French or German, but Hispanics expect Spanish out of each other, even if they’re Americans. Phooey.
I’ve since learned it fluently, started learning fluently about 20 yrs back. (I’m now 40) No classes, just self-study and asking parents. I’d buy grammar books and dictionaries, and would ask my folks how to say this or that, what’s the difference between this word and that, researching online, etc etc. Now I’m pretty good at it.
Oh yeah, and watching Chespirito tv shows has helped a lot, lol!
swine flu…………..
My husband is half PR and only understands spanish. He doesn’t give a crap, but I personally think he was robbed by his parents. His father speaks spanish and his mother speaks tagalog fluently so, I think they should have passed it down.
I speak Spanish fluently but have met many Latinos that don’t speak or understand it. Some of them do regret not learning it because the more languages you know the more people you can relate to.
I speak spanish =) ,but my cousins dont and it gets annoying because when we go to Mexico to visit the rest of our family,,they cant even talk right,,and they just seem dumb lol…I would understand if they were mixed or something but both of them are full Mexican and their dad doesnt even speak english that well, but they just have talked to them in english and they cant even speak english right lol..o well there still cool cuz there my cousins lol
idk i just hate it when ppl cant speak their own language.
I’m not, but my friends are half Honduran and they know their hertiage (and so forth), b/c of them I know more Spanish, lol.
