The Dominican Republic speaks Spanish, but a different dialect from the ones in Mexico.

There is a Caribbean island called Dominica, but I have no idea what they speak. Ask the guy to be more specific.

They both speak Spanish, but with the idioms, slang, the Caribbean trait of not finishing words & the distinct Mexican accent, I understand your dilemma. Buena suerte.

Yes, Dominicans and Mexicans speak the same language, Spanish. By definition, speakers of two dialects of the same language can understand and speak to each other. Since you can understand and speak to Mexican people, you are speaking the same Spanish.

You have identified that Dominican Spanish and Mexican Spanish are two different dialects of Spanish. Often when Spanish is taught in school in the U.S., the teachers gloss over the differences between the dialects, for a few possible reasons. Dominican Spanish and Mexican Spanish will naturally have some differences, just like there are differences between American English and British English, for example.
