Do Filipinos have any relation with Spanish / Mexican people?
I've always wondered this because their last names always sound so Spanish to me.

The Philippines was named after King Philip of Spain. The Philippines used to be a colony of Spain.
Spain had control over the Philippines for centuries and when they converted the Filipinos to Christianity, they gave them Spanish last names (last names weren’t common) and so that’s why. Most Filipinos today don’t have Spanish ancestry in them…
maybe like I know a girl who’s name is valdez. She’s probably part spanish but that’s not hispanic. latino is anything in the continent of the americas colonized by the spanish. So filipino aren’t hispanic.
i dunno but some filipinos do look mexican and i have confused them to be hispanic many of times so they may have some spanish ancestry
but then again most mexicans have native american ancestry and filipinos are asian and native americans are also in the mongoloid race so i can see why they resemble each other so much
The Filipinos were colonized by Spain,but their people were not as Hispanicised as the Mexicans.As far as having any relation to Spain the answer is no.Spain is a european country and the Philipines is an Asian country!

After the Spanish American war, the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Guam were ceded to the United States. In the case of the Philippines, the spanish language was the lingua-franca of the country. It was so for 330 years. HOWEVER, once the Americans colonized the Islands, they built the schools and the educational system and used ENGLISH as the medium of instruction. They systematically eliminated Spanish from the linguistic mosaic in the Philippines, virtually cutting the Islands from thier Hispanic heritage. Not many Latinos know and understand this. However, in 2007, a decree has been established to bring back the Spanish language in selected schools. Help them please. It would nice to have a Spanish speaking country in ASIA!
Most Filipinos do not even know thier Spanish heritage. Much history is written from 1565 to 1898 in the archives in Madrid and Mexico City. The problem is, they are written in Spanish and most Filipinos do not read in Spanish. This is why it is very important that Spanish is to be taught and spoken again in the Philippines. HELP them please Mexico!!!!
Spanish was the official language from 1565 to 1898. Then it became co-official with Tagalog and English from 1900 to 1973. At this point, fewer and fewer people were speaking spanish because the U.S. bombarded the country with movies, t.v. and music. The U.S. used the Philippines to become a power in Asia. In doing so, they had to ELIMINATE the Spanish language and Hispanic heritage from the people!
Today, most Filipinos do not even know WHY they have hispanic last names! It’s a crying shame. Help us MEXICO!
In 1973, the Marcos regime abolished Spanish as an official language. However, at the Universities, Spanish was still a required subject (12-20 units) to graduate with a diploma. This also ended in 1987, when a new constitution was written finally abolishing the Spanish language and almost 400 years of History from the Islands.
Because of how the American media negatively portrays Mexican illegals, most Filipinos do not even want to be identified with ther Hispanic past.
To all Latinos. You need to help Filipinos embrace their Hispanic heritage the Americans tried to eliminate. They need not be ashamed to be the Hispanics of Asia! Help MEXICO!

culturally, filipinos are somewhat related to spain & mexico because of almost 400 years of history with the spanish that from 1565-1821, it was administered fr mexico on behalf of spain and from 1821-1898, it was directly from madrid after the mexican independence. with this colonization came some influences in filipino culture notably the religion.
biologically, filipinos don’t have any relations to them except for a very tiny 2% (out of 3.6% with european blood). majority only got the spanish surnames thru a decree for better taxation & record keeping purposes.

It’s not a crying shame….it’s a shame when natives of Central and South America embrace their “Latino” or “Spanish” heritage, yet, the true latinos are southern europeans, not amerindians. Its a crying shame when most amerindians do not know of their history of the conquistadors and the horrors their ancestors went through, when the spanish arrived….
Well filipines was uNDER SPANISH RULE BUT ACTUALLY IT WAS NEW SPAIN THAT DID FILIPINO HAVE A LOT OF NAUHA WORDS WHICH WAS MEXICO NATIVE AMER LANGUAGE LIKE NANY TATAY ANNALS THE WORD LIKE PALENQUE WHICH IS NOT SPANISH OR FILIPINO .. AN MANY MORE MEXICO HAS MADE A BIG IMPACT ON YHE PHILIPNES NOT JUS SPAIN THAT WHY A LOT PPL SAY THEY LOOK ALIKE AS WELL. Filipinos have a narrow relationship with Mexico, because the Crown of Spain ruled this far land through Mexico. Many filipino traditions come from mexican roots and some filipino communicties lived in western Mexico, there in the state of Colima, growing up the plantations of coconut trees. Why some filipinos look like Mexicans?, because they are linked to Mexico, much more than Spain. Spain ruled directly to Filipinas until the 1800’s while Mexico had a tight relation with Filipinas from before. Even so, many Mexicans look like filipinos, because this trade in Between the Asian country and America, using the ship Galleon, which transported many goods from japan, Filipinas and Orient to America (Manila-Acapulco). Mexico and Filipinas are two sister countries. This is why many filipinos have Hispanic names and some cities there speak some of Chabacano, a mix in betweren Tagalog and Spanish.
Most of the information I’m reading I’m either with my mouth open or laughing….Mexicans don’t look Philipino at all. The Mexicans have so much European blood that it is insane…Sorry guys. And yes, I have to agree with the surnames being in Spanish for taxation and record keeping purposes. Other information that I am finding discrediting..there is no similar culture in the Philipines that they borrowed from Mexico or Spain.
