Yes its annoying, my ancestors took the time to learn English so should they, if they are here than speak English (I am mexican).
I don’t speak Spanish and have no desire to, people of European decent don’t speak the language of their ancestors (on avg) so why should you?
Ive actually been cussed out by people who expected me to speak Spanish, sometimes these people take offense to you not speaking it, as if it was required of you for being Mexican, frankly I am an American first so english is my language, anything else is second.
I also know three languages none of which are spanish that was my choice to learn them, i am not going to learn something because someone else thinks i am culturally required to.

Why do you take offense to it?
I think you must learn spanish. If you’re mexican and you’re proud of it, learn spanish and then you’ll be able to answer any question or chat…

Why do you take offense? If they are looking for someone to speak Spanish with, your looks make it more likely than not that you might be that guy. I am sure they intend no offense and don’t mean to embarrass you.
Actually, I think I do know why you get mad. You are mad at yourself for not knowing Spanish, and you feel kind of guilty about it. Why not make it a project? Monolingualism is a curable disease.

Don’t you do this everyday?
You go up to a white person and automatically assume they speak English.
I think you should get over it. And just tell them politely each time, "I don’t speak Spanish, no hablo espaƱol."

Do they make fun of you or get mad at you after you say you don’t know Spanish? That’s the only thing I could think of that would make it offensive. Otherwise, what harm are they doing? I’d actually find it flattering.
