Do you get upset when ou get passed for a job, because you don't speak spanish?
Well I do and I believe it is very discriminatory. America is a english speaking country not spanish. I live in California and this happens a lot. Even my hispanic friends complain, because they don't Speak spanish. Why not the immigrants and illegal aliens just learn ENGLISH. Why do we have to suffer?

I don’t think that it’s necessarily discriminatory. Employers have the right to hire based on their own requirements for a job. If they’re getting customers who speak Spanish, and their job is to please/market/sell to these customers, then naturally, they’ll need Spanish-speaking employees.
I think the discrimination we’re facing, as English-speaking Americans, is the refusal from immigrants to assimilate into American culture. Yes, that means learning the English language or attempting to learn it. I know there’s this huge debate about what American culture exactly is and why should immigrants be forced to assimilate into it, but I think we can pretty much agree that Americans, as a whole, are English-speaking, no?
Employers are just responding to their customers. If they can reach a demographic that’s rapidly growing in this country, then that means more revenue for them. Perfect logic from a business stance. So, yes, it does suck. I, too, was angered by job postings that stated "Spanish-speaking or bilingual PREFERRED".
There’s actually no way around it. I don’t see much change happening about forcing immigrants to learn the language the majority of Americans are speaking. You can either attempt to learn Spanish or work for employers who could care less if you speak Spanish or not.
Spanish isn’t that bad, if you are interested in learning it….
Hola, gracias, da nada, and Cinqo demayo is all you need. Well that and a little tequila.
Everything else should be extra credit.
I mean who cares if one can communicate like:
Se vc quer correr o risco de ate mesmo ficar esteril, continua se auto-informando e medicando pela internet! Nao brinca com sua saude!! Procura um Médico.abraços
That doesn’t bother me at all, because although I am not hispanic, I do speak spanish. Better than do many hispanics in fact.
Please look at your own ancestry sometime. There is a very good chance there have been people in it who did not speak english.
Well, aside from the fact that I wouldn’t be passed up because I AM fluent in written and spoken Spanish… it’s nothing to be upset about. It’s a matter of a business skill requirement. Would you be upset if you went to apply for a job at a dentist’s office and you were passed over because you didn’t know how to take those awful x-rays. If the job you’ve applied for has a certain skill-set requirement and you don’t have it, that’s not discrimination. In your case I’m assuming the business caters to the hispanic community. If that’s a stumbling block for your employment opportunities, maybe you should consider LEARNING spanish.
que?
It’s up to the business owner to determine what skills are needed for you to be the most productive employee possible. If someone who is fluent in Spanish will make more money for his business, then they should get the job.
If you owned a health club, who would you hire to work the front desk? A lean girl or a fat girl? What will your customers think when they walk into the front door of a health club and see an out of shape girl? You do what’s best for business.
You don’t speak Spanish & the fat girl doesn’t practice fitness. What’s best for the company?
if i’m not mistaken, when all this settling started, the american indians were speaking their language and then the british came and took over, bringing their culture, language and all kinds of laws for the "savages"so , what was left to do? hey learn the language that way we know that we’re signing our crap to these nice folks. if you don’t like the spanish language then move somewhere where it’s not needed; over here in the mid-west it’s pretty safe. spanish is supposed to be the #2 language in a few years, why not just go with the flow and learn. as for the immigrants, why would they try if there’s little miami’s and lil mexico’s; it’s for their convenience; i wouldn’t make my 80 yr old grandma learn just to make a few people happy.
Being bilingual is like being computer literate in some fields. If you are applying for jobs that require dealing with Spanish speakers, you will need to speak Spanish. Don’t get mad, get glad….sandwich bags….and stuff them with Spanish flashcards so you can learn a new language while you’re waiting for the doctor or the DMV clerk to call your name. The fact of the matter is that to an employer, someone who speaks two languages is better than two people who speak only one. It’s basic economics. I speak four languages and so can you.
