I have Spanish speaking neighbors who have lived in the US 16 years and can't speak English. When I recommend they learn English - they call me a racist! Why is that ?

I would bet that they aren’t even legal. Its a know fact these kind of people don’t come here to better them self (and they proof it by not even trying to learn English)they only come here for the free welfare our wonderful government gives them.Turn them in and hopefully you can get some neighbors that really care and will be an asset to our country…Edit…Uh excuse me people she said they have lived here for 16 years its not like they are just visiting our country they live here.I would turn them in they are leaches you can bet on it……
The race card is often used by people who can’t formulate a proper response that actually makes sense.
Just think of it this way even they know they are wrong but they don’t want to admit it so they just call you a racist to make them feel right.
Why do you care what language they speak?
If one of them is your grocery clerk, that’s an issue of being able to do their job effectively. How does their desire to continue speaking their native language affect your life in any tangible way?
I agree, they should learn English. Because there are many Hispanic enclaves, there is less incentive for some people to learn English. There are other people who don’t learn English (like Chinese) but not at the same rate.
I know it… just look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK4m5VSquh0&feature=related
I don’t know it seems Hispanics are crying racist once to often. They really need to learn English when they go for any medical services it cost us more money because they must use translators for everything and all important information is in English. How can anybody here for 16 years not speak or read english be out on the street driving when they cannot understand what the road sign says ?
Sounds to me like your Spanish speaking neighbor is the racist here. I would recommend you stay away from him/her, they can become violent.
depends on what is the reason you are doing it. If you are doing due to the fact you are a xenophobic, then you are a racist. If you are doing due to the fact that you are a friendly person who wants the best for your neighbor, your community, and society as a whole then you are not a racist.
Either way is not your business is they have managed to succeed without your help.
Because there are literally millions of Americans around the world who can’t be bothered to speak the language of their adopted country. They form into their own little cliques, attend their own little bars, send their kids to ‘American schools’ and basically ignore the language, culture and conventions of the country they’re in.
You hear all these wonderful excuses – ‘English is the international language of business’ is a particular favorite of mine. I even saw a thread on a Thai forum where people were complaining that ‘Thai people don’t speak good English’. That in itself is stupid and arrogant enough, but they were actually talking about Thai people IN THAILAND. Damn them foreigners for not talking English in their own country.
The Americans, along with the British, are probably the worst people on earth for learning the language of their adoptive countries.
When Americans start extending the courtesy of learning the language of other countries they’re in, come back and talk.
Incidentally if they can’t speak English, how did they know what you were saying and how did they manage to call you a racist? In English.
Good grief.
It is used, and recommended by many, including the supporters of the illegal aliens. However, keep in mind people like Teddy Kennedy, Dick Durbin, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and the President, have used that term to stop arguments. This movement to ask the President to honor his oath of office and enforce the Immigration Law was called Vigilante by Bush, but also racist.
It is pathetic. I would wonder if he is legal.
because you told them to turn down thier circus music and take thier children back in the casa after midnight.
It might be the way you approach them, I have no idea how the situation is but it might be either them being to shy or selfreliance or you marching over there and demanding them to speak english.
Either way I don’t know, are you their firend, maybe become closer and speak to them in their native language.
I don’t know under which terms you tell them that.
Why you don’t ask them ? How can we know that ?
Dougdigg, you make an extremely good point. Nothing to add there. You are the best !
Congratulations !
they obviously understand you….maybe they dont want to talk to you in English
