Spanish can be useful, but there’s alot of tricks… if 40% of the words are at least similar and with the same meaning, some other are completely different and others which are identical or similar have totally different meaning in each language:
burro = butter (Italian), donkey (Spanish)
salire = to go up (Italian), to go out (Spanish)
perro = dog (Spanish) pero = pear tree (Italian)
etc.
knowing Spanish is a very good starting point in order to learn some basic Italian; anyway at least (if you’re going to visit Italy) bring with you a phrasal book.
from what i understand some things in italian and spanish are very similar, so you might be able to get by using basic words. you should get a pocket italian/english or italian/spanish dictionary! when i visited my italian friend told me no one knows english (except her because she studied in the U.S. for a year) but i was glad to find that many of the people my around my age (20’s) spoke some elementary english at least. good luck!
Yes and no, some things in italian are the same in Spanish, but a phrase book will help with conversations.

Yes, lived in peru for 4 and a 1/2 years, and i’ve become fluent, when italians are around i constantly speak to them in spanish thinking that is what there speaking, only for them to say in english, "That was italian", so yes it’s very similar
italian and spanish are both romance languages and they are practically the same language, save for a few minor differences. obviously you wont be an excellent italian speaker/writer just from knowing spanish, but you will definitely be able to interact with people in basic everyday conversation. both of you will be able to understand what the other one is saying, even if you dont understand every single word exactly.

I lived in Venice, Italy up until i was round 16 years old. A lot of the words that sound very simialr could mean something completely different. my husband, my children and i took a trip down to Puebla City, Mexico a few years back and what i thought they were saying was something completely different, even though they sounded similar.
Not really. First I believe it depends on what dilect of spanish you speak.I am Argentinian and I believe that out of all the spanish countries Argentinas spanish is the most similar to italian.
When I went to Italy the first time to meet my family I understood maybe 30 percent of what was said. So Spanish helps some what but really dont count on using it to be completely understood.
not exactly. look up the basics and you will be fine because some words are similar, but not all.
Italian is really easy when you know Spanish, like gabrielalaura74 said, Argentinian Spanish is really influenced by italian, but Spanish is Spanish, I’m Peruvian, fluent in english and knowledgeable in Fench, Italian and Spanish share similar conjugations and the same phonology, meaning if you can read Spanish you can read Italian.
