Spanish in Latin America and Spanish in Spain – learn it all
I need to fly to tucson AZ and the rent a car and drive to Hermosillo,Sonara, Mexico....But I can't read or speak Spanish at all....Is this possible....Please don't tell me to fly because that just isn't an option..Do you know how long it would take?

No, a lot of Mexican people (in cities) speak or at least understand English. This will happen more often in touristic cities. The only places where you might have a hard time will be in small villages.
A tip: don’t refer to yourself as "American" meaning "US citizen". That’s offending to many people in this region because Mexicans, Peruvians, Brazilians, etc are also American.

if you go remember this.. NEVER act like you expect them to speak english, they will think this very rude. just ask them politley "¿usted habla inglés?"
Hello from a border city in Mexico. Usually mexicans are friendly and glad to help when needed. I advise you to be carefull and don’t follow instructions if you are not shure about the credibility of your adviser. Buy a map, and try to buy also an english=spanish dictionary It may help. Also you can contact the american embassy in Hermosillo and ask them directly about the risk and let them know that you are traveling down to Mexico.

If you rent a car from Tucson make sure they offer Mexico insurance and they allow the car to go to Mexico. You may also want to consider take the bus from Tucson. Tufesa is a luxury bus and is very reasonable. They have a website. As far as the drive from Tucson without speeding it will take you 4 hours. It will take you an extra hour on your return do the US border crossing. Buy yourself a small easy to carry translation book. They can be found at any book store in the states for very little money. If you make an effort to use the book to communicate the people are very friendly and helpful/ I make the trip from Phoenix to Hermosillo at least once a month. The roads are good and you will enjoy the trip. If this is your first time it will be an exciting and enjoyable adventure.
