I have a Chinese friend who came to America and learned to speak English. He also speaks Mandarin, Cantonese, and a little bit of Korean. However, one time when he was job hunting he was turned down for a position because he didn’t speak Spanish.
I’m disgusted that my friend isn’t considered "bilingual" even though he speaks four languages.
I’m also disgusted that a Chinese immigrant who took the initiative to learn English is denied a job in America in order to accommodate a minority that refuses to learn the language. To Hell with Mexicans!

Why, if said poster can understand Mexicans when speaking English, do other people have trouble understanding.

this person is thinking back to lessons on correct grammar and when to use the correct words. They should pick up the key words, being “what” and “flour” and possibly “find”. Bearing in mind their language woulf have find on the end they would find it hard to pick it up.
You know what they’re hearing when you say that? Something along the lines of, “What is flour?” !!!!
Before you start insulting, try thinking about your own actions. Most people who claim to speak “English” (of which you americans have BUTCHERED – I speak as an englishman) don’t acctually speak the language, they merely strong words together to get by.

I think if you can’t speak or read and write in English with tha ability to comprehend what is being asked of you you should not be working in any sort of customer service position. You should be making cat and dog tacos on the side of the road out of a taco stand.

I hate it when people just assume every hispanic person is mexican, they can be anything thats how stereo types get started. I learned english as a second language when i was little and its easier if you learn it at a young age. Im mexican , and everyone understands me perfect i understand hispanics perfect too when they speak to me in english becouse people think i look like a white person. Learning another language is hard

People these days are just ignorant. One doesn’t have to learn English just because this is America and it’s an English speaking country, in actuality the number of people who speak Spanish these days is increasing and one must not be so ignorant to say that if you can’t read, write, or speak English than you have to work out of a taco stand. OK. Yes, I’m directing my mexican self towards you Jose. That is just plain ignorant for you to say that especially because you’re offending me not because I work in a taco stand it’s because the people who work in taco stands dedicate their time to feed you stinking mouth, so stop offending MEXICANS who work in taco stands because I’m more than sure that you’ve stopped at one of those taco stands that make “cat and dog tacos” and don’t even bother lying to yourself.

Liz. How the hell are people (MEXICANS) going to understand what you’re telling them if you think of them as ignorant and don’t think they understand you. My mom doesn’t know English and she works as a Demo. If you don’t know what that is, go look it up. Well all the clients in the store sure can understand everything she’s telling them even though she might not pronounce some things right or say it in the right order. You just have to try and learn to understand what they’re saying.
Now for all the people who DO understand what us, MEXICANS are trying to say when we don’t know how to speak proper English, THANK YOU for trying to comprehend what we’re trying to say. Most MEXICANS who came to the United States didn’t have the opportunity to go to school and if they did most of them back then didn’t even get to go middle school. People who come from any other place that isn’t the USA tend to migrate to the USA because they want better lives for their children. Don’t try to blame one whole race for the mistakes of a couple of people. I know at least that my parents came to the USA, so they could give me and my brothers and sisters a better life. A place where we could get an education and have a successful career. No I’m not an immigrant I’m a U.S. Citizen, but I feel the pain of all the people who weren’t as fortunate as me to have papers or a green card to be in the USA. I feel what they feel because when you offend one of my kind, you will regret it someday because ALL YOUR MISTAKES COME BACK TO HAUNT YOU SOMEDAY. Who knows how it will come back to haunt you but it will. Trust me. Most of the people who are ignorant will still be ignorant when they’re older, and when they’re in a matter of life and death, that’s when they’ll realize who they are and who they’ve become. I’m a very strong minded person especially when it comes to race because there are so many people like those mentioned above who are just racist against MEXICANS or HISPANICS because I know for sure that they don’t know the difference between MEXICANS, hondurans, salvadorians, cubans, columbians, puerto ricans and all the other different types of hispanics there are. First of all, it’s ridiculous to compare the majority of Mexican immigrants with a Chinese immigrant. The U.S has historically gone into Mexico and brought in the poorest Mexicans as part of work programs (Bracero program for example), so chances are that they do not have the education level, and thus study skills and resources required to learn a new language. I’m guessing your Chinese friend was educated in China.
Secondly, we know that Mexicans as a group are just like every previous immigrant group where the first generation attains very limited English and the second generation is almost completely bilingual, and then the third generation is almost completely monolingual in English. The same happened with every single wave of non-English speaking immigrants to the U.S
Also, how do you expect Mexican immigrants to learn English or adopt “American” values when they are relegated to ethnic enclaves where the only other people there are other Latinos. Would you really welcome a Mexican immigrant into your neighborhood so he can “Americanize” himself? The idea that there is a set of behaviors that makes you “American” is ridiculous. The whole point of this country in the first place was people escaping oppression. So why are we going to start oppressing people who symbolize what this country is all about?– starting over in a country with more opportunity.
The U.S government is to blame for the so-called “illegal” problem. The U.S has historically sought after foreign citizens to work for nothing in large government work projects (i.e. Chinese for building transnational railroad systems, Japanese after we got tired of the Chinese (Chinese Exclusion Act), then Filipinos and Mexicans after we got tired of Japanese’s success in California and Hawaii). Aside from that, U.S subsidies for corn farmers ,programs that monolopize corn (formerly one of Mexico’s largest crops) severely damaged the agricultural economy in Mexico, thus leaving a whole lot of poor farmers to starve or move on.
The majority of Mexicans that come to this country have little formal education because they are the poor of Mexico. Rich Mexicans have no need to come here, so what we are getting is the result of two centuries of U.S mucking up Mexico. Every action has its consequences, and Americans should remember that. All of our problems now are a reflection of decisions made in the past.
