President Felipe Calderon, today blasted our deportations and said "Mexico does not end at its borders." And speaking to Mexicans in the US many of them here illegally he told them "Where there is a Mexican, there is Mexico."
That sounds pretty imperialistic to me. What would happen if we sent millions of Americans to [...]

History of the Southwest:
12000-15000 years occupation by migrants from Asia & also
Europe.
50-100 years partial occupation by Spanish with natives.
30 years indirect control by Mexicans, many natives dead from diseases & conflict.
160 years occupation by Americans.

I saw a show where full-blooded Mayans who didn’t speak Spanish were coming across the border and being called "Latinos"!
Most Mexicans could never claim to be Italian descendants or accepted by Latin Europeans as "one of them."

I find it very funny when Mexican people claim they are spanish. If you ever go to Spain you will notice that Spanish people have much much much more in common with those hated gringoes than ANY mexican. Why dont they just come out and call themselves native american? Because they are more native american [...]

I have personally seen this many times. People really get upset if they are from say, Brazil, and are mistaken for a mexican. Is there some sort of elitism amongst south american countries that they feel they are better than mexicans. I have also heard plenty of people from Spain that think this way too. [...]

Spanish is my second language, but I’m pretty much fluent since I used to live in Chile…the thing is, I understand Spanish when Mexicans from Mexico speak it, but for some reason it’s difficult for me to understand Mexican American’s when they speak Spanish.
This is stupid, but I’m serious…I’m wondering why this might be.
Thanks ^^

I’ve heard some people say, "They’re demanding that we speak their language." Granted, usually those are privileged white people who never talk to Mexicans.
But, I’ve never met a Mexcian who demanded that I need to speak Spanish.
Have any of you?

If they reside in the United States then they most likely speak three languages. English, Spanish and Nahuatl. Most Mexicans don’t know that when they speak Spanish they are actually using a lot of vocabulary from the so called Aztec language. As many of you may know. Mexicans are basically a combination of the l [...]

I want to know this because at my job a lot of mexicans come there and it’s hard for me to understand them when they are speaking to me. They speak English very poorly. I really would like to learn.

Hi,
This boils down to 5 key questions for me:
1] When and how did conquering Spaniards in indigenously-populated Mexico become "Mexicans?"
2] When did Spanish control of New Spain/Mexico cede to and come under Mexican control?
3] Was this (#2 above) when Mexico became a formal Mexican nation—and no longer a colony of Spain?
4] [...]

Here in California I have noticed that most Mexican Americans refer to other Mexicans as "Spanish". Why? Just speaking Spanish doesn’t make one Spanish. Being from Spain makes one Spanish. I speak English, but I’m not from England so I’m not English. I almost get the feeling that Mexicans here in California regard the word [...]

How would you best classify the varieties or styles of speaking Spanish In the Western Hemisphere, i.e., would it be Caribbean (or would you separate by specific countries like PR and DR/RD, Central American, Latin American. Would you distinguish the Spanish spoken by Argentinians separately? Distinguish the way Mexicans speak Spanish from other countries in [...]

I am an old rancher on the Mexican border. My family has ranched here since 1908. I’ve been looking at some of these answers. 99% of these people don’t have any idea what they are talking about.
These mexicans have changed. 50 years ago, they were all good people and I liked them. They lived with [...]

I’m totally white but I can speak spanish better than anyone (except the mexicans) in my high school spanish class, but my teacher teaches mexican spanish, so my accent is horribly mexican sounding (and american too of course). I want to sound like I’m from Spain or Argentina.
