My boyfriend is Puerto Rican and his whole family speaks spanish. I am in spanish II in my school, but its worthless. Im not learing anything in my school environment. I need an easy resolution other than learning from him or his family first.

I see in these boards that Puerto Ricans or Native Americans get offended for being called Mexican??

Jennifer Lopez is Puerto Rican and she got famous playing the part of a Mexican named Selana.

Esai Morales played who is Puerto Rican played the part of a mexicans brother in the movie "La Bamba."

Erik Estrada played the part of a Mexican in the Los Angeles PD called Chips

Lou Diamond Phillips who is native american got famous for playing the part of a Mexican name Richie Valens in La Bamba.

Some native americans played the part of Mexican/Guatemalan indians in Mel Gibson's movie Acapolicto.

And then they get offended for being called mexicans??

In Florida, all the spanish speaking people are Cubans and carribeans but, Mexicans take the blame because people think that because they speak spanish they are mexican.

Why can't mexicans be allowed to play the part of mexicans in Hollywood movies??

ok so every where people always say you look mexican are you and do you speak spainsh it gets anoying
my mom is black white and north american
my dad is black and puerto rican
i have tan skin and long curly dark brown hair

I looooove Spanish! It's such a beautiful language!! I was just wondering what your favorite Latin American Spanish accent was?? I asked this in another category, but I didn't get much answers so I'm asking again :)
Oh, thanks for asking :) Unfortunately I'm not that good enough to really tell the difference between each other that much, or at least not enough to tell what is attractive or not. But the ppl I've asked have said that they liked; the Argentinian accent, Costa Rica, Colombian, and Puerto Rican. I know that Argentinians have a slightly unique set of vocabs and pronounce their ll/y like zh, and PRs tend to drop the "S", and "RR" is sound like a Spanish "J"

Ok I have another interesting question. I want to know if hispanic people can distinguish other hispanic when they speak. I know for sure they have a common language which is "spanish" but I want to know exactly if they can distinguish other latinos apart from them.

Like lets say for example when guatemalan or puerto rican speak can a mexican know immediately that their puerto rican.

I know its a crazy question but I really wanted to know it because in English I can tell if their Australian or British right away once they speak.

Venezuelan, Colombian, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Argentinian, Chilean, Peruvian, Ecuadorian, Uruguayan, Paraguayan, Panamanian, Guatemalan, Costa Rican, Salvadorian, Dominican, Honduran, Cuban?

It doesn't matter where they are from, they (not including hispanic americans) always ask them if they are mexican or what part of Mexico they're from. Now, if they tell them first " I'm from-------" some of them will actually say: So, what part of Mexico is that at? Or Do you speak puerto rican, mexican, etc.?
Now remember, this also includes Americans stationed or living abroad in Europe. Some visit Spain are kinda shocked that spanish is spoken their. And still they ask hispanics there if they are Mexican.

I speak quite a bit of Spanish, but mostly Puerto Rican Spanish, and do not know a lot about Mexican culture, or differences in the various words.
I am not looking for something simple like "Hola. Como estas hoy?".

I have different Latino friends, and they said how Mexican Spanish is more "proper" since it sounds slower. Cindy, one of my Mexican friends, said that Mexican Spanish is similar to the way British people speak English (since it sounds more proper) than American English...if that's makes any sense. My Puerto Rican friend Julisa and my Dominican friend Gisella said how Dominican and Puerto Rican Spanish are spoken a lot faster with more slang. Is that true?

I am triracial (African American ,Dominican,Puerto Rican)
and cannot speak a lick of spanish all of my older brothers can but none of my sisters or myself can, and I would like to learn... but I am 27 years old amd my dad say's that I am too old to learn and that none of it will stick if I do try to learn. can some one help.

I am a complete outsider to these culture groups. I am not Puerto Rican and I am Not Mexican. But i want to know your opinion on the subject? What do PR's think of Mex. Spanish and mex Culture? What to mexs think of PR Spanish and PR's culture.

PS. I'm Salvadoran
Go Central American
Go C.A.

I've noticed that there seems to be a lot of differences in "proper" Spanish and Latin American Spanish, yet they all seem to be able to understand each other. The problem is, I'm finding it more difficult to learn vocabulary because some of my CD's are Latin American dialect, and some are Spain's, which is causing me a lot of confusion.

My question is, though I love altavista babelfish, it generally only translates from English to Spanish that is common to Spain. To get it to translate common Cuban, Puerto Rican, etc...Spanish, I have to already know the word I'm looking for in Spanish, then have it translate to English (ie. babelfish translates "table" to "tabla"...to get it to bring up "mesa" I have to do a reverse translation).

Anyway, are there any good translation sites that can help me with this issue? I want to learn as many forms as possible, so if I need the spelling help (I have trouble placing accents), I need a site that will translate the proper spelling of the word I'm looking for from my Latin American Spanish CD's...

Hope this isn't confusing.
I apologize if I've offended because when I said "proper", I didn't mean it to sound like I meant the right way...which is why I put it in parenthesis. I couldn't, for the life of me, think of the word 'regional'. That's why I'm looking for better translating methods, because I know that regionally, I would be more likely to hear the more it than the Spanish peninsular form.

I am half Filipino and half Puerto Rican and was raised in the US. Both my parents speak Spanish fluently and I understand it. I however, don't speak Spanish I don't have much of an accent when I speak. Whenever someone that speaks Spanish finds out that I don't speak Spanish fluently they look disgusted. Like now I'm not Puerto Rican enough. Anyone have the same experience?

I want to learn how to speak spanish since i am puerto rican but i can't downlaod or buy things of my computer.
