I'm hispanic and my parents are fluent spanish speakers but I cannot speak fluent spanish. I can understand most of the language and I can have simple conversations in spanish but I can't speak it as if it was english for me. What can I do to learn how to speak the language? Besides just being around the language at home. Are there any programs that could help me, like rossetta stone? The only problem with that is that i feel like i already know too much.
would you have something to say about that at the school? and it's not a spanish class, she says it's a class with nothing but basically spanish speakers.
since there are about 11 million spanish speakers in usa, should everybody learn how to speak it? so we can have better communication with hispanic immigrants?
Guess what, we are here for opportunity. My people will learn eventually. My parents learned in time when they came to the U.S and they are now succesfull.
There are other spanish speaking Latinos to worry about. Also, check out the Spaniards. They're white and they speak Spanish. In fact, because of their conquests years ago in Latin America, Mexicans speak spanish because their ancestors were forced to learn by the Spaniards. The Spaniards were the first Spanish speakers just like the British were the first English speakers.
By the way, I'm not racist. In fact, I hope to visit Spain someday as well as Japan.
Also, not all Mexicans are brown. I'm white skinned. A lot of people have thought that I'm not Mexican until I start talking like one.
By the way, I learned in James Clavell's Shogun that language is the key to survival in any country.

By the way, I was born an American citizen thus making me Mexican-American. I'm not an immigrant. My parents have been American citizens for 4 or 5 years now. I helped them study for their exams.

SPANISH SPEAKERS, Have you ever eavesdropped on people talking about you that didn't know you speak Spanish?
Have you ever been in a room and had a Mexican think you were white and talk about you without knowing that you were Mexican and could understand everything he was saying. This has never happened to me, but I have heard of this happening to other people and it just seems funny.

Okay, please do not be offended, (no racism intended) but I've noticed that Mexican Spanish speakers tend to talk really fast and I have a hard time understanding them, but I can understand other dialects just fine, (Cubans, Argentineans, Chileans, Spanish, etc.)
So my final two questions are why can't I understand Mexican Spanish as well as other dialects and are Spanish speakers from Mexico known to have the fastest Spanish speaking dialect?
I personally believe English should be the Universal Language for the United States...however, there's alot of accomodating for spanish-speakers!!~! I can NOT go to Mexico and demand they speak English ---what's up with this???
While searching on the internet, I've noticed that there is a large Spanish speaking population in certain states (cities, towns) like the ones I've mentioned, along with the state of Florida. Some employers state that Spanish speakers are a must in order to gain employment. So, for people who live in these states, can you tell me how necessary it is to learn fluent Spanish.
A popular Mexican seafood chain restaurant is being sued by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday. The EEOC said two former Ostioneria Michoacán #8 employees were unlawfully fired shortly after being hired.
"During the orientation, they were told they were being fired because they could not speak Spanish and their servers were required to speak Spanish," said Kathy Boutchee with the EEOC. "You can't use Spanish speaking for a requirement as a job unless there is a business necessity. A business necessity is not for the convenience of the employer."
The EEOC said that even though its a Mexican restaurant, located in a largely Hispanic area, the agency's investigation shows the majority of the restaurant's customers are not made up of only Spanish speakers. It said, therefore, speaking Spanish should not be a requirement to work at the restaurant.
The Michoacán Seafood Group's attorney said, "Michoacán is an equal-opportunity employer. The company strongly denies that it engaged in any discrimination. The two former employees in question were terminated for legitimate, business-related reasons. Michoacán will aggressively defend itself and fully expects to prevail in a court of law."
The EEOC said the two former workers are seeking back wages, punitive damages and other relief from the restaurant. http://www.click2houston.com/news/21169062/detail.html

I have a job interview this week at a retail store. I live in a city with a high population of Spanish speakers with many who only speak Spanish. I have worked retail here before and it was definitely a hindrance. That employer never asked if i spoke Spanish however, assuming I did since I'm Hispanic.
I'm concerned this employer will ask however. If they do ask, how can I respond in a way that makes it seem like less of a handicap?
Most popular youtube stars are ones who speak English and are American. Are there any that are popular to Spanish speakers or any other language?
Should it be against the law to speak spanish in public unless the speakers offer a translator to non Spanish speakers ?
My husband's work has made it their policy that no one can speak spanish at work. The manager was asking all of the english speakers if they were annoyed by the spanish speakers. Today they handed out a policy letter to all employees not to speak spanish.
Do they have a legal right to do that or is it going against freedom of speech and it is discrimination??
There were no customers around- they work in a warehouse.
I am an American of German descent and have been learning/speaking Spanish for the past 6 years. I know that many times, when my cousins and I encounter an English speaking person who is not a native German speaker, we often switch to English because my cousins often find it annoying to hear an American speaking in German (I have no idea why). Is this true with Spanish speakers also or is this just my family being too sensitive?
I understand spanish very well. I have taken about 4 yrs of spanish in school and have done alot of outside listening by immerising myself in alot of spanish media (rebelde), anyway in my line of work we have a lot of spanish speakers who I can understand but i dont have the abliity to reply back to them in spanish,.... how do I fix that, what did you do to learn how to speak spanizh
I've never studied Spanish officially, but I think if I did that I would like European Spanish better. If I learned to speak Spanish like it's spoken in Spain, would I have any trouble being understood by Spanish speakers in the Americas?
