A popular Mexican seafood chain restaurant is being sued by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday. The EEOC said two former Ostioneria Michoacán #8 employees were unlawfully fired shortly after being hired.

"During the orientation, they were told they were being fired because they could not speak Spanish and their servers were required to speak Spanish," said Kathy Boutchee with the EEOC. "You can't use Spanish speaking for a requirement as a job unless there is a business necessity. A business necessity is not for the convenience of the employer."

The EEOC said that even though its a Mexican restaurant, located in a largely Hispanic area, the agency's investigation shows the majority of the restaurant's customers are not made up of only Spanish speakers. It said, therefore, speaking Spanish should not be a requirement to work at the restaurant.

The Michoacán Seafood Group's attorney said, "Michoacán is an equal-opportunity employer. The company strongly denies that it engaged in any discrimination. The two former employees in question were terminated for legitimate, business-related reasons. Michoacán will aggressively defend itself and fully expects to prevail in a court of law."

The EEOC said the two former workers are seeking back wages, punitive damages and other relief from the restaurant. http://www.click2houston.com/news/21169062/detail.html

I wondering if white people in hawaii are also bothered when people there speak hawaiian? To me california is the same as hawaii. Before U.S. took over most people in california spoke spanish that's why all the major cities in the state are spanish, starting with SAN (translation SAINT). It's the same in hawaii before the U.S. took over the language was hawaiian and all theyre cities are hawaiian named. So would people speaking spanish in California be the same as people speaking Hawaiian in hawaii. Why do people get bothered by it?

Recently, our local school system put a bill on the ballot to increase taxes for the sake of rehiring four teachers that were laid off. Although I voted against the raise, because they didn't itemize, the bill was voted in. Now we have discovered that the money is being used to rehire four SPANISH teachers, and hire another four Spanish speaking teachers as well. Their goal is to have all the children in the school system speaking Spanish, as well as English, by the year 2008.
Si, Robert L., yo l'hablo, pero gracias por me demande.

Well I know the basics and a little more, but I would like to become fluent in speaking spanish. Is there a computer porgram or some way to do so that any one would suggest ?

I'm planning to take spanish lessons in a two months, but I am wondering speaking spanish requires you to be able to roll your tongue. I can't roll my tongue right now, so will I have to learn how or can you get by without it?

Here in California I have noticed that most Mexican Americans refer to other Mexicans as "Spanish". Why? Just speaking Spanish doesn't make one Spanish. Being from Spain makes one Spanish. I speak English, but I'm not from England so I'm not English. I almost get the feeling that Mexicans here in California regard the word Mexican as an insult. Why? Being from Mexico makes one Mexican just as surely as being from Italy makes one Italian.
