When is it socially appropriate for immigrants to speak in their own language? When is it inappropriate?
In public, everyone should always speak in AMERICAN.
Immigrants should only speak other languages at home.
The ONE and ONLY exception to this rule is in restaurants oriented towards certain food types, such as waiters in a Mexican restaurant speaking to each other in Spanish, or in an Oriental Chinese Buffet having the waiters talk to each other in Chinese.
Why sympathize with the red coats? English is not the same.

Of course! Immigrants should only speak other languages at home or appropriate places. I think native speakers don’t like when other people speak foreing languages. I’m Brazilian and every time I travel to USA or New Zealand, I rather speak English.
I completely agree with you, except that AMERICAN ISN’T A LANGUAGE. You are beginning to sound arrogant and ignorant.
I’m not sure how to speak American…but I do speak English and I believe that people should be able to speak their own language in anywhere that is outside of the workplace unless they need to translate within the workplace.
It’s English, not American!!!!!!
Americans speak "English".
You give cons a bad name.
American, and not English? LOL!
The answer to this question is simple and logical, actually. One should talk in the language of the person they are talking to. It doesn’t matter where they are at. Location is arbitrary and irrelevant. It matters who they are speaking with. Can the person they are speaking with understand them? Then they are speaking the right language. Simple.
There is no such thing as a language called "American!" We speak ENGLISH in the United States.
It will be a separate and distinct language when British English becomes unintelligible to North Americans. Till then it remains ENGLISH.
And it is rude to speak another language when those around you do not speak the second language. If everybody speaks ENGLISH, then English should be spoken.
I only know that when i lived overseas, i learned how to speak their language. It’s only common courtesy.
I believe the only time immigrants should speak their own language should be only at home, unless they have a guest who does not understand, then they should speak in a language that the guest will understand. It is rude to speak their language when others don’t speak it.
They should be able to speak whatever language they want, but not expect others to accommodate them. They should also be able to speak fluent english in order to even be considered for citizenship. My grandmother was required to learn english in the first grade.
If you live here you should speak English. You can speak whatever other language you want at home, but if you live in America, speak English.
*** For the record, I agree American English may as well be called American since it’s different than all other forms of English.
Speaking of other languages in public is completely and one-hundred percent WRONG.
And some immigrants have the audacity to come to our country and try to supplant our language with theirs. Disgusting.
It’s America, dammit. We speak ENGLISH!
Actually American IS a language because weve transformed that original content of english and americanized it, the only people who speak true english live in england.
People can speak whatever language they want!!!
Not saying you don’t have a right to be a lazy fatass (Its your choice if you dont want to learn any other languages).
There is no harm in being bilingual or trilingual.
American? lol ok and when they are home they should speak mexican, hondurenian, germanian, etc etc… I personally speak whatever I feel like speaking at the time sometimes it’s spanish sometimes it’s english it doesn’t bother me when I’m at the store and there’s people speaking other languages I mind my own business. Personally I don’t understand peoples obsession with finding out what other people are saying I don’t go places and talk about other people so why should they care what I’m saying. Just my opinion thought I’m sorry if people don’t agree with me.
You would have to speak approximately 311 languages to be able to speak “American”. People should speak whatever language they choose to as long as it is to their benefit. I speak Spanish, Italian, Tagalog, and English whenever I please and with whomever I please. That is my right as a true American.
