They might have meant ‘dialect’- but then all languages are dialects. Slang is a term used for words- not languages… Slang is a register of words used by a specific region or area where a language is spoken. Dialects on the other hand can cover a whole country or region and can be much more noticeable through the vocabulary and grammar that a region/country exhibits in the use of the common language. So I would say that Mexican Spanish is a dialect of Spanish (from Spain), and Mexican Spanish contains it’s own slang depending on the many different regions in Mexico… but I wouldn’t say that Mexican Spanish is a slang of Spanish. Doesn’t make sense.
american english is a bit like "slang" to englands english because we make up words from other words and/or cut it down from the original word and use different meanings to words that wasnt originaly meant. for example: in england a buscuit is called a cookie. the americans changed the meanings to it.
over time the americans changed some of the english words…..another example is the word Color. the original way of spelling it was Colour but the americans spelled it without a ‘U’
same way with spanish in Mexico. And the same with french in France and french in Canada.
Well, there are other differences other than the accent.
The biggest difference is the use of "vosotros" in Spain Spainish, although if you use it in Latin America, they usually know what you are talking about. It is an informal "you plural" that is only used in Spain.
It has been my experience, however, that when I say vosotros in Latin America by accident – which doesn’t occur very often since you typically know where you are – you do get some eye-rolling, but it’s largely ignored by most of the people. They usually just want to know how long you’ve been visiting.
So I don’t know who would say that about Latin America Spanish, but I’ve never heard that…
no accent is not the only difference. There are words that are unique to American English that persons in England do not understand. And vice versa. Same with Mexican Spanish and "old" Spanish. The meanings of words have been changed or are different all together. For example brown is marron in old Spanish but in Mexican Spanish it cafe(spelling). Both American English and Mexican Spanish are bastardizations of the original versions.
When people say "slang" they usually mean "dialect". But actually the definition of what is a language and what is a "mere dialect" are transiting. The bounds are layed out absolutely arbitrary. In linguistics there is the saying "a language is a dialect with an army".
Anyways dialect and accent are two different things. As for the accent there is only a different way to pronounce words. On the other hand, a dialects uses completely different words, meanings etc. for certain things.
Nope. There is no difference.
Spanish is Spanish.
Each country has their unique form of "slang" words.
Spanish example: compañero
in Mexico: carnal, compa, güey (büey)
in Costa Rica: mae
As for the voseo, there is a small population in mexico that use the voseo form too.
the only difference is accent and certain words to designate certain nouns. also the ustedes/vosotros difference. Mexican spanish is certainly not slang, i don’t even know what you mean by that.
