I desperately need to learn how to speak fluent Spanish. I know basic grammar and vocubulary, but?

I cannot hold a decent conversation with someone. Whenever I try to talk to someone at school who speaks Spanish, they either speak too fast or use vocabulary that I do not understand. What can I do?

  1. I suggest hanging around more with people who speak it and try to listen carefully. Watching television in Spanish would be helpful too. Or if you can afford it and are desperate enough you can move to Mexico, Spain, or any other country that speaks Spanish.

  2. I understand exactly what you mean. I am also studying Spanish and deal with the same thing. I think a great way to get accustomed to hearing Spanish but with less stress is to watch TV shows and movies in Spanish. The more you watch, the more you’ll understand and get used to hearing it spoken quickly. Kid movies are especially great since they have very basic vocabulary. I like to spend a lot of time in Yahoo! Respuestas, the Spanish version of Yahoo Answers. This also gives you practice conversing with native Spanish speakers with less stress than real life.
